Leadership

Co-directed by Dr. Elizabeth Quinlan, Biology Professor, and Dr. Alan Faden, the David S. Brown Professor in Trauma at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (SOM), the center will bring together the scientific expertise of UMD with the clinical faculties of SOM in Baltimore. It is the latest collaboration between UMD and UMB through the MPowering the State initiative, which is designed to leverage the strengths of the two institutions.

Alan Faden received his medical degree from the University of Chicago and neurology training at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). He is the David S. Brown Professor in Trauma and University of Maryland Professor; with appointments in the departments of Anesthesiology, Anatomy & Neurobiology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and Research Professor of Kinesiology at UMD. Dr. Faden serves as Director of the Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) Organized Research Center; as scientific co-director of the bi-campus Center for Sports Medicine Health & Human Performance; and as Associate Dean for Trans-Campus Research Advancement. Dr. Faden was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Neurotherapeutics and is on the editorial boards of five journals. He has been a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and a fellow of the American Neurological Association, the American Academy of Neurology and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Faden served as President of the American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics, first President of the National Neurotrauma Society and as President of the San Francisco Neurological Society.

Elizabeth Quinlan

Elizabeth Quinlan, PhD

University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP)

Dr. Quinlan is a neuroscientist who studies the impact of age and experience on the function of cortical circuits. She received a PhD in biology/neuroscience in 1993 from the University of Illinois at Chicago and postdoctoral training in neuroscience at the University of Virginia in the laboratory of Shelly Halpain, PhD, and Brown University in the laboratory of Mark Bear, PhD. She joined the faculty of the Department of Biology (CMNS) at UMCP in 2001, where she is currently a professor.

She is a founding member and director of the Physiological Systems graduate program at UMCP, serves on the executive committee of the Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences Program (NACS/BSOS) and is a member of the Steering Committee of the campus wide Brain and Behavior Initiative. Dr. Quinlan is an associate editor at Visual Neuroscience. She has pioneered the use of sensory deprivation to promote plasticity and “rejuvenate” circuits in the mammalian cortex to recover function lost by disuse. This work was recognized in 2010 with The Advancement of Science Award, Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association.
