Welcome back!

This page will be updated as the University response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve.

We are excited to welcome you back to ESJ! As you return to the building you may notice that things look and feel a little different, but much remains the same. As always, in addition to hosting academic classes, ESJ will be open for quiet study. Details regarding how use and maintenance of ESJ has changed as well as resources to help the community stay healthy and safe are provided below.

General Information

Building Hours

ESJ has resumed its normal operating hours:

7am-10pm
Monday-Friday
Closed
Weekends and all UMD holidays

Building Access and Navigation

Anyone with accessibility needs may enter through the most convenient door for them, and proceed through the building using their preferred route.

A change you will notice is how you navigate the building. Signs have been installed to designate the safest path of travel where larger volumes of use are anticipated. Hallways are marked as one-way, doors are designated as entrances or exits, stairs are up or down only, and arrows on the floor and walls direct occupants to navigate to their classrooms and instructional labs. We thank you in advance for adhering to these guidelines.

We recommend viewing ESJ’s building flow map to find the best way to reach your classroom or desired study location, available here. These maps also outline which exterior doors may be used as entrances to the building.

Building Entrances

Below are the ONLY doors that may be used to enter the building. All other doors are exist only.

Room Access

Not all rooms can be accessed from any floor or entrance. Please see below for recommendations about the entrance to use and the best route to take to reach your room. To maintain physical distancing, the use of stairwells is strongly encouraged.

Reopening FAQ

How is ESJ preparing to reopen the building?

  • Sanitation stations with hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes have been installed throughout the building. Reference the building flow maps for their locations.
  • Classrooms, labs, elevators, corridors, and stairways will be cleaned daily by UMD facilities management staff. Building occupants are encouraged to use the provided disinfecting wipes to wipe down their work area upon arrival.
  • Face masks are required for all building users at all times. View a UMD informational video on how to wear a face mask here.
  • Signs with reminders about safe health practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have been installed throughout the building.
  • Signs outlining safe physical distancing parameters as well as limits on the number of users in the elevator have been posted.
  • Furniture in public areas and classrooms has been spaced 6’ apart, and tables have been added to allow more individual study stations. We appreciate your help keeping furniture properly spaced.

Will classrooms and work spaces be cleaned between use?

Classrooms will be cleaned nightly, and public area furniture will be cleaned periodically throughout the day. Users are asked to wipe down their work stations upon arrival, using provided disinfecting wipes. For more information on UMD FM cleaning protocol, click here.

May I still reserve a Huddle Room?

Yes! The recommended capacity for the Huddle Rooms is 1-2 people and occupants should stay 6’ apart. ESJ aims to prioritize Huddle Room use for students who need a quiet space to attend a live online class or give a remote presentation. We ask that during normal class times (9a-5p), users refrain from reserving the spaces only for quiet study purposes. Huddle Rooms can be reserved here.

Where is the lost and found?

Due to COVID-19, ESJ will no longer collect lost and found items. Found objects may be left in the bin outside of office 0118 on the ground floor. Owners may retrieve items at their own risk. If the found object is of value, you are encouraged to take it to UMD Police in the Pocomoke Building on Route 1. Thank you for your understanding.

May I host an event in ESJ?

In accordance with public health guidelines, the majority of programs will be virtual this fall. Academic schedulers may request space, as usual, through 25Live.

If you are part of an academic unit, please reach out to your unit’s scheduler.

If your unit does not have a scheduler, please fill out this event form.

Any requests must adhere to new room capacities, available on 25Live and agree to meet all event requirements as outlined by UMD's Engagement/Events Guidelines. Some events may require upper level approval; please read this document and seek approval, if applicable, before making your request.

Please note the following guidelines in general purpose classrooms:

  • Events must adhere to the event guidelines and processes outlined by the university.
  • No events may be hosted before 7am or after 10pm in any campus GPC.
  • Weekend events will require special approval.
    • Additional fees will apply, and the event must be coordinated by Conferences and Visitors Services.
    • Contact the ESJ operations manager for more information. 301.405.4702 or esj@umd.edu.
  • At this time, use of GPC spaces is reserved only for members of the UMD community.
  • Any requests must adhere to new room capacities, available on 25Live and outlined below.

Does ESJ have a One Button Studio (OBS)?

Yes! One Button Studios are an exciting new resource on campus. Here, you can simply and easily create a high-quality video recording of a presentation. To reserve the studio on ESJ’s ground floor or learn more about UMD’s One Button Studios, click here.

Where are the dry erase markers and erasers?

In order to reduce the number of shared touch surfaces, all dry erase markers and erasers have been removed from classrooms, huddle rooms, and other areas. Students and instructors are encouraged to bring their own and carry them with them throughout the day.
