ESJ Terp Classrooms

The University of Maryland is committed to creating classroom environments that support team-based and collaborative modes of teaching and learning. The goal in creating these spaces is to promote student-centered teaching practices by creating technology enhanced environments that enable every person in the classroom to Teach, Engage, Respond, and Participate.

TERP Classroms are:

  • Flexible, technology-enhanced spaces that accommodate a variety of teaching and learning styles
  • Environments free of traditional barriers where students and instructors can more easily interact with one another
  • Spaces with furniture and technology solutions that allow students to work in groups, collaborate, and master cooperative learning techniques

UMD academic departments may reserve space through their scheduling officer. If you do not have a scheduling officer, please email esj@umd.edu with your request.

Tiered Collaborative

Tiered collaborative rooms offer specialized fixed-seating arranged on tiers that are two rows deep. This allows students in each pair of rows to easily collaborate around a central table for team-based exercises.

6Round

6Round spaces are designed without a primary teaching wall; with round tables where students sit in groups of six throughout the space. The instructor’s station is in the middle of the room and marker boards are situated on the perimeter walls adjacent to each of the round tables. One projection screen on each of four walls allows viewing of up to two images simultaneously from any seat in the room.

Green Roof

The Edward St. John Teaching and Learning Center includes two green roofs. The largest of the two was designed primarily to serve storm water management needs as part of ESJ's sustainability goals and has a more shallow growing medium to suit vegetation specific to this purpose.

The second green roof has been designed for use as a teaching and research space to provide students in Plant Sciences and Landscape Architecture with hands-on experience in the green-roof environment and includes a deeper growing medium to allow for a wider variety of planting possibilities.
